Go Green at Home

Being the first eco-friendly hotel in Chicago, the Hotel Felix has been a leader in “going green.” Everything from bamboo flooring & recycled carpet to motion/heat sensored thermostats. It’s been amazing to see the response from our guests when they stay somewhere that is good for the environment without having to sacrifice comfort or style.

But we aren’t the only ones who can help; you can do the same at home too. Change out standard incandescent bulbs to low energy CFL or LED versions. Not only do you save 20% in cost but also have a bulb that lasts 15 times longer. Or add a low flow showerhead to your bathroom. These showerheads don’t need to feel like they have no pressure- as is proof in our rooms (come and stay to see for yourself.) Try the Kohler K-973 that we use here that has a 2.5 gallon per minute flow rate. It saves water  & energy but feels like a rainshower. In cold Chicago weather, one great way to impact is to insulate your hot water heater. It won’t have to work as hard to product heat thus saving fossil fuels & you save 15% on cost.

Want to find out how one person affects the environment? Go to www.carbonfootprint.com. We use this site to see how our building positively affects the Earth but it can be used for individuals too. By taking public transportation, using CFL, keeping AC low & recycling, I personally took 34 cars off the road & saved 45 trees from being cut down. How can you impact? I challenge you to find out.

“City gal’s” family comes to town

I grew up in a small town just outside of Pittsburgh, PA, and most of my family still lives in the area. I left home to go to college & never moved back. Working in the hotel business has put me in many interesting places since leaving Pittsburgh – Washington, DC, Boston, LA. However, not until I landed in Chicago did they even consider coming to visit.

Last fall, I was so excited about their trip. It was going to be short but it was the first time I could “show off” one of the great cities I’ve resided in to my folks. Our visit wasn’t as planned though; my dad got sick & we spent the entire time in the hotel room.

Today starts our second attempt at them seeing Chicago. Suddenly, I realized…….what do I do with them after they check-in? They’ll be in this magnificent city in a premiere hotel (Hotel Felix, obviously) and then what? How do you even begin to choose what to do with so many options? So I went to the experts – my concierge staff. The staff gave me amazing information – what day/time to go enjoy Taste of Chicago, where to get the best view of the fireworks, which tours allow you to see the most of town and which restaurants run specials on what nights. Not only do these guys make me look good day-to-day but also they are now going to make me look good to the toughest critics – my parents.

P.S. if you want to know these secrets & many more, you’ll have to check-in for yourself. Book now at www.hotelfelixchicago.com.
