The Last BBQ

Labor day is a highly celebrated holiday but rings in a sadness at the same time: end of summer is approaching. Labor day marks the last summer holiday, so you might as well go out with a bang before the cold weather traps you indoors. The usual celebration of this festive holiday includes one large BBQ, drink, friends and family. Here are a few recipes to try out at your Labor Day Extravaganza:

Tex-Mex Burger with Cajun Mayo

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon Cajun seasoning
  • 1 1/3 pounds ground beef sirloin
  • 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and chopped
  • 1/2 cup diced white onion
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon Cajun seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 4 slices pepperjack cheese
  • 4 hamburger buns, split
  • 4 leaves lettuce
  • 4 slices tomato

  1. Preheat grill for medium-high heat. In a small bowl, mix together the mayonnaise and 1 teaspoon of Cajun seasoning. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the ground sirloin, jalapeno pepper, onion, garlic, 1 tablespoon Cajun seasoning, and Worcestershire sauce using your hands. Divide into 4 balls, and flatten into patties.
  3. Lightly oil the grilling surface, and place the patties on the grill. Cook for about 5 minutes per side, or until well done. During the last 2 minutes, lay a slice of cheese on top of each patty. Spread the seasoned mayonnaise onto the insides of the buns. Put burgers in the buns, and top with lettuce and tomato to serve.

LM Bistro in Zagat

We’re excited to share two articles from Zagat highlighting the opening of LM Bistro, the new French restaurant adjacent to Hotel Felix. The first (viewable here) describes the transformation of the former Elate space into what will be LM Bistro. The second (viewable here) includes LM Bistro in their piece detailing Chicago’s five best hotel restaurants.

Thanks Zagat for the shout outs! We’re excited to welcome the newest addition to the Hotel Felix family.

Celebrating 54 years

2012 marks the 54th Air and Water Show. On the shores of Lake Michigan, boats and aircraft take part in entertaining the masses. This years high speed entertainment will take place August 18 and 19, 2012 at North Avenue Beach.

This years headliners include the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, U.S. Army Parachute Team: Golden Knights, and the U.S. Navy Parachute Team: Leap Frogs. The parachute teams typically jump out of the aircraft 12,500 feet above North Ave. Beach and can reach 120 mph during the free fall.

Military aircraft, U.S. Coast Guard and the Chicago Fire Department will provide entertainment throughout the day. The show will take place from 10 am to 3pm, both Saturday and Sunday. Be sure to hit the beach early because the sand fills up quickly with patrons!

Welcome LM Bistro!

We’re excited to welcome LM Bistro, the approachable French gastro bistro, as the new concept restaurant adjacent to Hotel Felix. The owners of LM Bistro, Stephan and Nicole Outrequin Quaisser, are partnering with Elate owner, Anthony Fiore, to open the restaurant in the space that used to house Elate. LM Bistro was formerly located in Lincoln Square.

It will be a coming home of sorts – four members of LM Bistro’s team (including the co-owners), along with our general manager, George Jordan, previously all worked together in key positions at The Drake. Needless to say, we’re looking forward to having “the gang” back together! With their sleek, upscale concept and outstanding menu, LM Bistro is a perfect fit for the River North neighborhood.

Going Green for Dinner

Choosing the right restaurant for dinner is always a challenge, add in the factor of eco-friendly and the search just became harder. Chicago is filled with restaurant after restaurant so we have complied a list of Guaranteed Green restaurants for your convenience.
These restaurants display the Guaranteed Green decal in their window, meaning they are guaranteed to be certified by either the Green Restaurant Association or Green Seal, two independent, national non-profits that uphold environmental standards for restaurants. Foodies unite and enjoy!

Survival Tips for Lollapalooza 2012

It is that time of year again where musicians flood into Grant Park for the three day musical extravaganza. Various artists head to the Windy City to entertain the patrons during the first week of August. Lollapalooza 2012 will take place August 3-5.  It has been over twenty years that Lollapalooza rockers have been gracing the stages of Grant Park. This year’s headliners include Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Black Keys, Black Sabbath, Jack White, and Florence and the Machine. Festivalgoers from far and wide head to Chicago to get a taste of both established musicians and those who are trying to catch their big break.  Click here to see the 2012 Lineup.

Along with a three-day festival, the featured artists will be performing After Shows throughout the city. To secure tickets for an intimate showing of your favorite band, click here.

Large festivals can be overwhelming at times. Here are a few quick tips to plan your musical experience for the better:

–       Stay Hydrated! August can be rough under the Chicago summer sun and being surrounded by thousands of other people can kick up the heat. Remember to push the water; vendors will be set out around the grounds helping patrons stay hydrated.

–       Sunscreen: to avoid the blistering heat, load up on the SPF. It is a necessity to fight off the UV Rays and avoid a painful night!

–       Be familiar with the fair grounds. Don’t miss your favorite bands, click here to take a peek at the 2012 map.

–       Most importantly, enjoy the music, Chow Town, and Green Street!
