With the warm weather approaching us, we are excited to share these fun events taking place throughout the month of May – did we mention they are free?

Be sure to take advantage of Chicago’s beautiful spring and summer weather, the abundance of shopping and nightlife opportunities, and of course, our beautiful lake front.

Below are a few of our favorite free events taking place throughout the month.

Saturday May 6 – Kids and Kites Festival – Montrose Harbor

Grab your family and head to Lincoln Park for a day full of sunshine and smiles – and kites! The best part of the event is that if you don’t have a kite, free ones will be provided at the event.

Saturday May 13 and Sunday May 14 – Renegade Craft Fair – West Side

This massive fair is perfect for serious crafters to bond for their love of handmade art. The event will be taking place outdoors and is a perfect place to roam around and admire the art – and hopefully to take home a gift for yourself!

Saturday May 27 – Memorial Day Parade – Downtown Chicago

Chicago’s annual Memorial Day Parade kicks off on May 27 and has been a tradition since 1870 in honor of all the men and women who have fought for our country.

Our Hotel Makes USA Today’s 10 Best List

We are thrilled to share that our hotel has been featured in USA Today’s 10 Best List as one of the best hotels with boutique amenities and services.

It means a lot to our hotel to be recognized for the work we have done and what we continue to do to positively influence our environment. USA Today writer Jamie Bartosch shares her love for our hotel, mentioning that we are the first hotel in the city to meet Silver LEED certification:

“As downtown Chicago’s first hotel designed to meet Silver LEED certification, it delivers an enriching experience that not only benefits its guests, but the environment, too. Organic materials. Renewable resources.”

Not only do we pride ourselves in our chic, eco-friendly amenities, but our interior and architecture, which Bartosch noticed.

“As you enter the hotel’s architecturally unique and historic 1920s facade, you’re greeted with delightful dancing waters, white marble columns and a host of services tailored to your every desire. Whisper-quiet rooms blended with gentle tones and plush furnishings create an invitation to relax and escape.”

Green Ambitions for 2017

Here at Hotel Felix, we strive to keep an environmentally sustainable practice with all parts of hotel. With 2017 on the horizon, we hope to continue these eco-friendly practices and with inspiration from a variety of other businesses around the world who are implementing the same sorts of goals. Check out some of our favorite green ambitions for 2017, via

Ted Monk, the vice president of Sodexo, hopes to “be able to embed sustainability more deeply into our operating businesses and business development. I want to help them understand the business case for sustainability and help them to be able to articulate it to their clients and customers.”

Keith Kenny, the VP of global sustainability for McDonald’s, wants to “evolve our sustainability framework and integrate it deeper into our brand purpose. This is our challenge for 2017 and beyond as we need to have a framework that is broad enough to resonate in all those communities but also specific enough so that our customers understand what is important for us.”

Alexis Ludwig-Vogen is the director of corporate responsibility and sustainability for Best Buy. She hopes to see the company :lead the way in transitioning to a low-carbon economy, not only by reducing our energy consumption and sourcing more renewables, but by helping our customers reduce their environmental impacts, too.”

Check out the website for more goals from a variety of business leaders on their goals for 2017 and how to make our society a little more environmentally friendly.

We look forward to reaching some of these goals for our hotel, too!

The Chicago Smart Lighting Project is Underway

Just a few months ago, the city of Chicago announced that seven different Chicago neighborhoods would introduce new streetlights installed over residential blocks, arterial streets, and alleys.

The Chicago Smart Lighting Project will upgrade streetlights with modern lighting technology – replacing nearly 270,000 sodium lamps with updated, state of the art energy efficient LED lights.

These new additions will ultimately get rid of Chicago’s orange glow that is famously seen during the night. Read more about it here.

“The installation of better, smarter and more-reliable street lighting is a win-win; it’s a win for energy efficiency and a win for quality of life in neighborhoods throughout the city of Chicago,” Mayor Rahm Emanuel said.

Intersections in Rogers Park, Hollywood Park, and Humboldt Park are just a few places where new lights will be installed and feedback from community members is encouraged in order to see where else the lights will continue to installed and when.

If you want to submit feedback, you have until the end of 2016 by an online survey or by mailing comments to  CDOT Streetlight Demo, 30 N LaSalle Street, Suite 1100, Chicago, IL 60602. To find more information about this project, check out this article from TimeOut Chicago.

Some fast facts about the new lighting, via

• LED stands for light emitting diodes.

• LED lights use less than half the energy of HPS lights.

• LED fixtures last up to three times longer than HPS lights.

• The new LED lighting provides a whiter light; different than the orange-hued HPS lights that have been in use since the 1970’s.

• LED lighting is clear, crisp light that improves nighttime visibility.

• The Smart Lighting LED fixtures, along with lighting management network, will allow the City to adjust light levels to meet specific lighting needs.

• Chicago’s new Smart Lighting is designed to direct light downward where it is needed, towards streets and sidewalks, while minimizing the light that shines into resident windows.

We’re thrilled to see our city implementing more environmentally friendly concepts!

Eco-Chick Visits Hotel Felix

Earlier this year, Lindsey Brown, a blogger for Eco-Chick, had a chance to visit our hotel. Brown is the managing editor of the blog, which is “the world’s first sustainable living site for women,” according to the website.

She focuses on sustainable fashion, health, and travel, which was why she was such a perfect fit to come stay with us during her time in Chicago!

Lindsey appreciated our hotel’s innovations in eco-friendly travel without sacrificing comfort and style. See what else she had to say:

“I found Hotel Felix to be equal parts luxurious and environmentally innovative. I appreciated the small details at Hotel Felix during my stay such as its use of gorgeous reclaimed materials throughout the hotel, smart lighting and energy conservation in my room, the abundance of natural sun exposure, and even some ethical art.”

“We found Hotel Felix to also be incredibly convenient, as we were close to the wedding as well as some must-see Chicago stops like the Magnificent Mile and The Loop. We also enjoyed walking outside the hotel and being surrounded by so many incredible Chicago restaurants.”

Below are some shots from her visit and you can read the post in full here.
