It’s been H-O-T this week in Chicago with a capital “H”! Short of jumping into the nearest pool, we’ve compiled a few of our favorite ways to beat the heat and cool down your jets:
-Make a batch of healthy homemade popsicles! We shared a few simple yet delicious recipes here – think honeydew lime and green tea peach.
-Keep a cucumber water mister handy in your desk or bag. Add cool water and a couple slices of cucumber to a miniature spray bottle. When you want to freshen up, lightly mist your face. Cucumber is naturally moisturizing and, as a bonus, smells delicious.
-Jazz up your glass of water with slices of fruit or fresh herbs. Let natures candy sweeten up otherwise tasteless water and kick it up a notch! You’ll end up drinking more water when it’s infused with flavor. Our favorites include lime, mint and orange.

While some days it feels like we skipped spring here in Chicago, one thing is for certain, we can put our snow shovels and boots away – we’ve made it through another blustery Chicago winter. As the temperatures warm up and Chicagoans gradually thaw out, the city welcomes an alternative mode of transportation: the bicycle! It’s quite fitting that May is recognized as National Bike Month because, while many brave commuters bike year-round, this is about the time when there seems to be a new wave of cyclists on the road. In honor of National Bike Month, we’d like to share a few bicycle safety tips to help everyone share the road effectively:
-Ride in the same direction as automobile traffic
-Obey all traffic signs and signals
-Use hand signals
-Follow lane markings, they are for bikes too!
-Don’t weave between parked cars
-Keep both hands ready to break

We love watching movies here at Hotel Felix and are very much looking forward to The Oscars this Sunday. Whether you’re catching it on the couch or throwing a viewing bash with your buds we have some great entertaining tips to green up your night:
-Consider purchasing your party food and supplies from a locally-owned grocer (if you’re in Chicago, we love Green Grocer Chicago, Goddess & The Grocer and Southport Grocery)
-If you aren’t able to buy your items from a local grocer, buy organic when possible
-Do you have a stockpile of old wine corks? Recycle them for the party. (Carefully) cut a slice halfway down the corkscrew and insert a piece of paper that serves as a placeholder or describes the food you’re serving.
-Ideally use reusable plates, serving ware, cups and utensils but if you have a very large group that might not be possible. In that case we recommend Whole Foods’ 365 store brand – they have sturdy plates, cups, etc. that look like paper but are actually made from renewable and biodegradable sugar cane.
-We hope this one is a no-brainer but recycle your rubbish from the night’s festivities. If you’re unsure whether something is recyclable, check the container’s label. Every little bit helps!
Last but not least, have fun celebrating Hollywood’s biggest night!

We love hearing about natural remedies and thanks to this article on Natural News, we learned even more about the many ways apple cider vinegar can boost your overall health. Here are a handful of surprising ways this kitchen cabinet staple helps your body:
-Body Detox: Apple cider vinegar helps balance the overall pH balance of your body which aids in detoxifying. Apple cider vinegar can help stimulate cardiovascular circulation and detox the liver.
-Weight Loss: Studies show regular intake of acetic acid, prevalent in apple cider vinegar, lead to decline in body weight, abdominal fat and waist circumference.
-Lower Blood Pressure and Cholesterol: According to a 2001 study published in Bioscience, Biotechnology and Biochemistry, a huge benefit of apple cider vinegar is it’s ability to lower blood pressure and triglycerides, a.k.a. “bad” cholesterol.
Interesting, right? Here are some suggestions on ways to incorporate apple cider vinegar into your daily diet: add a spoonful to your morning smoothie, add a dash to your bowl of soup or put a splash in a glass of ice water and honey. 1) Give your basic bath a boost
Baths are a simple way to de-stress after a long day and relax tired muscles. Several pure, all-natural household ingredients make it easy to transform your everyday bath into a luxurious soak session. Simply add a cup of milk, two tablespoons of honey, two pinches of sea salt, and a ½ cup of oatmeal to running bathwater. The wholesome ingredients work together to detoxify, soften, and soothe skin.
2) Fix yourself a cup of green tea
The Chinese have been aware of the mind-blowing benefits of this miracle brew since ancient times. A study from Harvard outlines several of the medical benefits to this bloat-banishing drink, including lowering cholesterol and reducing the risk of cancer. Steep a green tea bag in a mug of hot water for several minutes, add a spoonful of honey for a little extra sweetness, and cheers to your fabulous self!

- ½ cup extra virgin olive oil
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon of lemon juice
- dash of honey
Mix all ingredients together. Smooth the mixture onto face and décolletage and massage gently. Rinse with warm water.

4) Refresh your feet the all-natural way
Your tootsies are tired! Reward them with a nice, long, relaxing soak. Prepare a pail or bathtub with warm water. While the water is running, add two drops each of chamomile and lavender essential oils. Both herbs are known for their relaxing properties.
Next, immerse your feet in the fragrant water. After soaking for several minutes, gently slough away dead skin and fast track circulation with a pumice stone. Pumice stones are naturally formed from lava and are an excellent tool to smooth your feet. Dip your feet back in the water to rinse off any remaining dead skin. Finish off by slathering on your favorite deep-moisturizing lotion.
5) All-organic (& edible) deep-conditioning hair mask
For a silky smooth mask for your mane, look no further than your kitchen cabinet. Our all-natural hair treatment will turn your limp, lackluster strands into shiny, luscious locks. Simply mix one jar of organic mayonnaise (such as Spectrum®) with one ripe organic avocado (the riper it is, the easier to mash) until you have a uniform mixture. Apply the mask liberally to your hair, from roots to tips. Wrap hair with a slightly damp towel and leave on for 30 minutes. Rinse thoroughly and enjoy your newly conditioned coif!
